Broad Policy Statement and Objectives of The Commission


The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission was established with the following aims and objectives: (i) To conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable Local Government Elections in Edo State in order to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level; (ii)To conduct Bye-Election(s) into any elective offices that may become vacant in the Local Government Councils; (iii)To undertake the prosecution of cases that might have arisen from the conduct of Local Government Elections at the Tribunals and High Courts; (iv)To assist the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the compilation of Voter Register and delimitation of Wards in the State; (v)To generate revenue for the State Government especially from the sale of forms to contestants vying for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions in the 18 Local Government Areas of the State as well as registration of contractors wishing to do business with the Commission; (vi)To ensure regular maintenance of office equipment and other infrastructural facilities owned by the Commission such as air-conditioners, computers, generators and boreholes, among others; (vii)To ensure adequate training for members, staff, Electoral Officers (E.Os.) and Assistant Electoral Officers (A.E.Os.) in the Field Offices of the Commission in the 18 Local Government Areas as well as other Ad-hoc staff engaged in the conduct of Elections.

 According to the National Chairman of the Association, Mr Chris Ayuba the visit was just to identify with one of their own on his well deserved appointment as the Chairman of the Commission as well as pledge their support for him been someone who has done the set proud at different levels of endeavour.

 The chairman in his response appreciated his set members for identifying with him as well as blessing him right from their school days. He dedicated his present position to them having given him a title right from Secondary School days as "Nomyange u class" meaning the shining light of the class which he believed is what has taken him to this level in life.

 He promised to carry out his responsibility diligently by conducting free, fair and credible Local Government Council elections in the state. He also enjoined them to collaborate with his commission to deliver on credible elections.

 The group also presented a congratulatory card to the chairman.
